24 Resume Tips for 2024:

  1. Pick out a job target before you startย to write the resume
  2. Know yourself, know your audience, and know what matters most
  3. Customize content for every job โ€“ general resumes donโ€™t work
  4. Write your resume for the reader. No, the resume isn’t meant for you!ย
  5. Make your value known
  6. Use a tailored resume header that speaks to the job you want, not the job you have
  7. Avoid common resume myths
  8. Use the right resume format for your unique career
  9. Be strategic with how much career history you share. 10-15 years of recent employment detail is typically sufficient
  10. Highlight top career achievements andย provide the proof
  11. Focus on achievements, not tasks, in your resume. Yes, everyone has results to share
  12. Start strong. The top 1/3 of the file is critical
  13. Lead with resultsย and front-load points throughout for greater impact
  14. Let the resume be storytelling in nature
  15. Weave the right keywordsย throughout the file that relate to the target role and audience
  16. Use an active voice with lots of action words
  17. Include appropriate white space; make it easy to read
  18. Remember, content is king, but presentation matters too
  19. Remove any possible resume red flags to help improve application success
  20. Embrace your experience and don’t let age define you
  21. Increase emphasis on soft skills –– but be sure to be specific and share examples
  22. Aim to keep your resume updated. Often!
  23. Stay abreast of current resume trends and best practices for 2024
  24. Finally, be mindful of how you use AI in resume writing (yes, it could help, but it can also hinder)
