Beyond Executive Resume Writing: Expanding My Expertise in Career Strategy
I spend a lot of time asking executive clients to think carefully about what they want to be known for and how accurately they are communicating the value they bring. Over the years, I have asked myself these same questions.
Early in my career, if someone asked what I did, the simplest answer was that I wrote résumés. It was accurate, but it barely scratched the surface of the work that I do.
Today, I see the résumé as just one part of an executive engagement. I often spend hours talking with clients about their leadership experience, exploring business challenges and results, finding patterns across roles, clarifying their value, unearthing achievements, and figuring out how to share their story across different materials.
This shift in how I see and talk about my work has also shaped how I build my own expertise.
My practice supports senior executives, and I intentionally continue to develop the skills and knowledge I need to serve them well. That means staying current, challenging what I know, deepening my expertise, and investing in professional development that directly supports the work I do every day.
Recently, this commitment led me to a new milestone: I earned three Master-level certifications from Career Professionals of Canada (CPC)(opens in new tab):
Master Certified Career Strategist (MCCS)(opens in new tab)
Master Certified Employment Strategist (MCES)(opens in new tab)
Master Certified Interview Strategist (MCIS)(opens in new tab)
In many ways, these three credentials formalize what my work has taught me over the years: supporting an executive career requires much more than creating a great résumé.
Earning the Master Level
CPC’s Master-level certifications recognize experienced career professionals who have already earned and held the corresponding Certified-level designation for more than one year.
These credentials demonstrate applied expertise, professional experience, and a lasting commitment to career development.
I am pleased to add these 3 new master-level certifications to the 2 master-level certifications I already hold: Master Certified Resume Strategist (MCRS) from CPC and Certified Executive Resume Master (CERM) from CDI.
Master Certified Career Strategist (MCCS)
Career strategy is woven throughout my work with executives.
The MCCS covers career development and planning, personal branding, networking, and career transitions. These areas are especially important for executives, since their next steps may not be clear and their career stories can be complex.
For my clients, this expertise supports the early strategic work we do together: clarifying the target, identifying patterns of leadership success, uncovering a compelling value proposition, and determining how to position years of experience for what comes next.
Before we can tell a strong career story, we need to know exactly what that story needs to communicate.
Master Certified Employment Strategist (MCES)
The MCES focuses on employment and job search strategy, including value proposition and career branding, networking, résumé communications, interviewing, reputation management, and the effective use of technology throughout a search.
Many executives I work with have not actively looked for a role in years. Others are pursuing a different level of leadership, entering a new industry, considering fractional or advisory work, or discovering that the hiring landscape looks very different than it did the last time they made a move.
This expertise helps me see the bigger picture when I create career materials. A résumé or LinkedIn profile should support a wider job search, clearly show the right value, and give decision makers a reason to keep the conversation going.
Master Certified Interview Strategist (MCIS)
The MCIS is equally important to my work because executive career storytelling doesn’t end once the résumé and LinkedIn profile are complete.
This certification encompasses interview strategy, value proposition, behavioural and situational interviews, challenging questions, reputation management, reference checks, negotiation, and post-interview strategy.
When I work on executive résumés, I spend a lot of time exploring the stories behind each client’s career. We look at the challenges they faced, the decisions they made, the people they influenced, the teams they led, the changes they drove, and the results they achieved.
These same stories become powerful tools during executive interviews.
A strong résumé may open the door. Once inside, the executive needs to communicate the thinking, leadership, and business impact behind what appears on the page. My goal in my résumé writing work is to help clients brainstorm and refine career stories for later discussions.
Continuing to Invest in My Craft
I have always strongly encouraged professionals to invest in continuous learning and development. So, in a nutshell, I am practicing what I preach.
Additionally, the executive hiring world keeps changing. Technology is shifting how candidates are found and evaluated. Career paths are more varied, and senior leaders must show their value through résumés, LinkedIn, networking, interviews, and roles like fractional, advisory, or board work. I want to stay current with these changes.
My clients invest a great deal of trust in me when they hand over the story of their careers. I take that responsibility seriously. I earned the MCCS, MCES, and MCIS as part of my ongoing commitment to developing my craft and delivering greater depth, strategy, and expertise to every executive client I support. It also shows that I am not just “a résumé writer”.
