How to Sharpen Executive Resume Content

How to Sharpen Your Executive Resume Content

I’ve been writing and reviewing resumes for over 15 yearsโ€”a long time. After all these years of working on executive resumes, I still see one widespread mistake in these files: heavy emphasis on day-to-day tasks and minimal results. If you want your resume to rise to the top and get noticed for leadership jobs, it has to share value. Value is best demonstrated through results.

It is one thing to claim you are good at something, like directing teams or turning around operations. It is another thing entirely to provide proof.

You must sharpen your executive resume content if you want your executive resume to perform better. Dull resume details are things that anyone could share: “responsible for, “โ€ฆ.” results-oriented,”โ€ฆ.” directed a successful and high-performance team,”โ€ฆ.” generated massive revenue.”

Basic statements fall flat with readers because they do not say enough.

Content that performs better in a resume is sharp and to the point. Here are several strategies to help you enhance content and improve the value of your resume โ€“ getting you better noticed for top jobs.

Ensure details are your own and tell *your* story

When you write your resume, focus on what makes you unique. What are YOUR value-adds, and what themes have played out in YOUR career?

You may be known for stepping into challenging situations and leading big turnarounds with impressive outcomes. Or, you may have a history of generating significant cost savings through innovative strategies. These are the details employers are hungry for! Share your career story from the very top of the file all the way through.

Let’s break down an example. Below is the headline of a prominent executive. The headline sets the stage with scale and scope of oversight (start-ups to established enterprises, 2,000+ employees, multiple sectors, etc.)ย  but also outlines prominent leadership themes of turning around organizations, propelling growth, creating customer-centered companies, and implementing change with significant speed.

Next, the career highlights section from the same resume backs themes up with several carefully mined examples throughout this executive’s work history. I bet the following gets your attention! Details here are strategically designed to capture a reader with hard-hitting impact statements supporting major career themes while providing measurable results:

Finally, here’s a snapshot of this executive’s most recent role. Note the ongoing emphasis on significant career themes in moving quickly, company turnaround, impressive growth, and customer-centric operations. All information continues to include specifics and metrics:

Share details that are specific, not general

Resume readers are not interested in reading a laundry list of basic job overviews in a resume.

If you find yourself simply writing out your job tasks and putting them into bullet statements โ€“ stop! Re-write your resume statements with a CAR focus:

  • What was a Challenge you faced?
  • What Actions did you take to resolve or improve the challenge?
  • What was the end Result of your efforts?

Turn basic and boring resume statements into heavy-hitting details that share the specifics and make the reader want to learn more.

Feed the resume reader relevant examples of success to support your offerings by creating high-impact, specific, and robust resume statements that emphasize and back up your career themes.

Resume statements that effectively overview challenges, actions, and results across executive areas of expertise might look like:

Make content concise and easy to digest

Finally, less can be more in a resume. Oversharing or writing text-heavy narratives risks burying crucial content or not being read at all.

The best resumes get to the point fast. To identify what matters most in a resume – and what to keep off – you must know the target job’s requirements and customize your content for every opportunity. Yes, every time.

Skimmable, relatable, and well-aligned content always trumps long-winded, general, and dull details in a resume!

Long-Winded:

  • “Responsible for overseeing the financial aspects of the company, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning, which ultimately led to better management of resources and improved financial performance over time.”

Concise and Measurable:

  • “Improved financial performance 20% through strategic budgeting and forecasting.”

Long-Winded:

  • “Played a crucial role in leading a team that was tasked with developing and launching a new product that aimed to enter the market and capture a significant portion of the target audience, resulting in an increase in sales and market presence.”

Concise and Measurable:

  • “Led product launch, capturing 25% market share and generating $10M in sales.”

Long-Winded:

  • “Worked on enhancing the efficiency of the company’s supply chain operations by implementing new processes and systems, which led to a significant reduction in the time it took to deliver products to customers and an overall improvement in operational efficiency.”

Concise and Measurable:

  • “Reduced supply chain delivery times 35% and improved operational efficiency 20% after introducing efficiency enhancements.”

Long-Winded:

  • “Managed the company’s marketing initiatives, focusing on various campaigns to improve brand awareness and customer engagement, which contributed to a notable increase in customer acquisition and retention rates over the course of several months.”

Concise and Measurable:

  • “Increased customer acquisition 30% and retention rates 25% through targeted marketing campaigns focused on brand awareness and customer engagement.

The concise statements focus on specific achievements and quantifiable outcomes, making them more impactful and easier for hiring managers to quickly understand the value brought to previous roles.

Sharp, specific, and results-driven resume content in an executive resume is essential. You’re mistaken if you don’t think you have any specifics or results to share in your resume. Everyone has done great things in their work. Every person has done something well in their work, and these things can be measured more often than not. The key is to start writing them down!
